When former President Mubarak was in power, Egypt’s textile factories had begun to decline. Hundreds of factories closed later.
At present, this situation is getting worse, and the number of closed factories is rising rapidly. Since the revolution, more cotton farmers have turned to other crops. Therefore, textile factories import raw materials from India and Pakistan. The government imposes duties on the import of raw materials.
In the past two years, approximately 30,000 textile workers have lost their jobs across Egypt.
