Bluesign Technologies, a Swiss-based company, has announced that it will publish planned limits for the safe use of chemical substances (such as additives or dyes) in finished chemical products.

The company will launch Bluesign System Black Limits (BSBL) on July 1, 2019, and said that this move is different from the MRSL (Manufacturing Restricted Substance List) method.

“Unlike MRSL, there is no intention to send BSBL to the supply chain, mainly to obtain less substantial and certain compliance statements from the intricate supply chain network, “Bluesign explained. “Instead, the main purpose is to manage hazardous substances in end-use chemical products. Transparency increases when restrictions are made public, and our Input Stream Management (InputfStream Management) includes chemical assessment and management, of which BSBL is only one component, Bluesign It is a powerful, responsible and sustainable driving force to shift textile manufacturing towards safer chemicals.”

The chemical substances listed on the BSBL are excerpts from the BluesignTool, launched in 2002, and include all substances in the publicly available Bluesign System Substance List (BSSL), defined in Use ban. These substances include substances that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductively toxic, or substances that fall under the regulations of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

In addition, BSBL contains Acrylamide, Acrylamide, and EthyleneOxide monomers. All of these substances may be contained in polymers and must be monitored by system partners in the chemical industry during the polymer manufacturing process, including the widely used Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylates.

According to the EU definition, SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) related to the textile industry is directly mentioned in BSBL, and its limits are mostly lower than the EU safety limit of 1000ppm . For SVHCs not specifically listed, there is a fixed safety limit of 1000 ppm.
