Nepal’s garment industry exports have reached a new low, declining every year. Since the implementation of the WTO agreement in January 2005, Nepal’s exports to the United States and other countries have lost quota arrangements.
As the economic crisis spreads, Nepal’s garment industry exports fell again in January, down 73% compared to the same period last year.
In a memorandum of understanding signed with the government, the Nepal Garment Association requested that garment exporters be exempted from all taxes and promote garment exports. This will generate more employment opportunities for garment industry workers.
The first vice president of the association said: “We demand that all exports from the country, including clothing, carpets, shawls, etc., should be tax-free, including income tax. Due to the economic recession in the United States and Europe, exports have declined. In order to maintain the vitality of factories and maintain workers For work, garment exporters should be exempted from all taxes. We also demand the establishment of an export promotion center where competitive products can be produced.”
