Exquisite designs, complex patterns and technical excellence have become the trade symbols of Indian carpets.
As one of the largest carpet manufacturing centers in India, the Bhadohi region in Utah accounts for 65% of India’s total carpet exports. Carpets in the region are currently under severe pressure. Market experts say the once-thriving carpet industry is on the verge of death due to lack of the right support from the government.
The global economic recession is fueling this situation. Market insiders say export orders worth Rs 3 billion were canceled recently.
The president of the Indian Carpet Manufacturers Association said that due to the global market recession, the Indian carpet industry is facing a shortage of export orders and payment delays. More than 2 million rural craftsmen are at risk of unemployment. At least 50% of export companies cannot repay their loans. Government support is urgently needed. Better tariff rebates and low-interest export assistance can help the carpet industry.
The Indian carpet industry is 100% export-oriented, and the domestic market is small and developing very slowly. Every year, India exports more than 35 billion rupees of handmade carpets to various countries.
The carpet industry that once provided employment for 300,000 people cannot even provide employment for 10,000 people.
If the market situation does not improve and the government does not pay attention to the carpet industry, it will be very difficult for the carpet industry to survive in the fiercely competitive world environment.
