According to the forecast of the United States Department of Agriculture, imports of cotton textiles and clothing into the United States will increase year-on-year in 2015. From January to June 2015, U.S. cotton product imports equaled cotton consumption to 4.1 billion pounds, a year-on-year increase of nearly 5%. Export volume of cotton products increased by 6% year-on-year to 928 million pounds. Offsetting the two, the U.S. cotton products trade deficit from January to June this year was 3.2 billion pounds, higher than the 3.1 billion pounds in the same period last year.
The major suppliers of U.S. cotton products are still relatively concentrated. From January to June 2015, the top five supplying countries accounted for 64% of total U.S. cotton product imports, up from 63% in the same period last year. China is still the main source of U.S. cotton product imports, but its market share has declined in recent years, while the import volume and market share of other supplier countries have expanded. In the first half of this year, China accounted for 30% of U.S. cotton textile and apparel imports, India accounted for 11%, Pakistan accounted for 9%, and Bangladesh and Vietnam each accounted for 7.5%.
