Australia is a major wool-producing country, but most herders still use traditional sales methods to sell wool. Some businessmen who are good at lateral thinking believe that Australian shepherds will be more profitable if they sell wool directly online. However, after six years of research and development, Stephen Rice, manager of an eBay-style company, said the company was still struggling to convince pastoralists to deviate from the “old” method of selling wool.
Rice believes that doing business over the Internet is currently “super efficient” and says that if the flow of information can be improved, all supply chain participants will save money. He said, “This is especially true for the wool industry. Now you can integrate finance, banking, freight, logistics, warehousing, and tracking systems. Everything is electronic, safe, secure, and very efficient.”
To this end, Rice and his business partners (including some shepherds and middlemen) have invested US$1.5 million in “Internet wool trading”, but after six years of efforts, they still have not been able to convince most shepherds. Sell wool online.
Rice said, “The Australian wool industry is an old, mature and well-established industry. It is like those huge ocean liners, which have to travel hundreds of nautical miles before turning a corner.”
Rice hopes their review of the wool marketing system – conducted in conjunction with the Australian Wool Development Corporation – will persuade industry to sell wool online. He said, “Herders undoubtedly benefit the most, but other participants in the supply chain such as middlemen also benefit. Because efficiency has improved.”
On July 21, the Wool Marketing System Assessment Group will hold a workshop in Melbourne, where they will discuss the views expressed in more than 50 submissions.
Stuart McCulloch, chief executive of the Australian Wool Development Corporation, said most submissions referred to the lack of competition in the current wool marketing system.
More than 95% of Australia’s wool production is sold through traditional methods. If it is not changed, it will affect the development of the wool industry.
