According to statistics from Jiangsu Zhangjiagang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Zhangjiagang imported a total of 323,000 tons of cotton in 2014, a year-on-year decrease of 31.1%. Analysts believe that the main reason for the decline is that cotton traders and cotton-using enterprises have adopted a wait-and-see attitude in purchasing imported cotton due to the impact of domestic cotton subsidy policies. In addition, my country’s imports of cotton yarn from Southeast Asian countries have increased rapidly, which has further restricted the use of imported cotton.
In 2014, the bureau found that many batches of cotton from India and other countries were seriously downgraded, and the company claimed a total of US$13.544 million in external claims. The Zhangjiagang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has strengthened the quarantine supervision of imported cotton, and has successively intercepted quarantine pests such as Rattus norvegicus and Spotted beetle from imported cotton containers. We also intensify inspections and inspections of imported cotton with unqualified quality and weight shortages to safeguard the order of imported cotton trade and the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises.
