In recent years, governments in Southeast Asia have raised the minimum wages of their workers. Statistics show that the legal minimum monthly wages in Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and other countries in 2015 increased by 20-30% compared with 2014. The minimum wage in some countries will reach 80-90% of the level in major Chinese cities.
In November this year, representatives of the Cambodian government, manufacturers, and labor unions finally voted to increase the minimum wage for Cambodian garment industry workers from US$100 to US$128.
Starting from January 1, 2015, Vietnam’s legal minimum wage will increase by an average of approximately 15% compared to this year. The minimum wage in first-tier areas in Vietnam, such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, will increase by 14.8% from this year to 3.1 million VND (approximately RMB 889) (per month); in addition, wage standards in second- and third-tier areas have also increased significantly.
