According to Pakistani official forecasts, affected by Pakistan’s cotton production reduction and the elimination of cotton import tariffs, Pakistan’s cotton import volume is expected to reach 4.3 million bales in 2018, with an import value of approximately US$1.22 billion.
Recently, Pakistani cotton importers signed approximately 3 million bales of cotton import agreements with India, the United States, and Brazil to meet domestic cotton demand. Since cotton picking in Pakistan has not yet ended, it is expected that Pakistan’s cotton harvest will reach 12.1 million bales by the end of April 2018, and the cotton gap in the textile industry will reach 3.1 million bales.
It is understood that Pakistan’s cotton imports mainly come from India, with an average annual import volume of approximately 2.6 million bales and an import value of approximately US$822 million, followed by the United States and Brazil. Stimulated by the upcoming abolition of cotton import tariffs by the Federal Board of Revenue of Pakistan, Pakistan’s cotton imports are expected to increase significantly in 2018.
