According to data recently released by the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia’s garment exports reached US$3.92 billion in the first eight months of this year, an increase of 7% compared with the same period last year, but a significant decrease compared with the 16% growth rate in the first six months of this year. Because the recent strikes have affected the normal production of enterprises, some well-known international brands have moved their orders to other countries.
A survey conducted by the Cambodian Garment Association among its members showed that orders from many companies have gradually decreased, overtime work has also decreased, and some factories have even closed some production lines. On the wage issue, Cambodian labor unions accused the factory of confusing the public during this wage negotiation. The union asked the government to increase the minimum monthly wage by US$77 from US$100 to US$177, but the factory could only increase it by US$10. It is reported that the Cambodian Ministry of Labor has decided to explore the final salary solution at the end of this month.
