The government of the Oriental Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo recently decided to establish the Lower Uélé Cotton Production and Agriculture Company and acquire the former Northern Development Company (Codenord) to revitalize the province’s cotton industry.
The former Northern Development Company was established in 1987 as a company specializing in cotton production and planting. It was mainly responsible for supplying raw materials to several factories of Kisangani Textile Company (Sotexki) in the Lower Uele region. Declared bankrupt due to operating losses and other reasons, and liquidated by government departments. Since then, Kisangani Textile Company’s business has fallen to a low point due to supply difficulties and local armed conflicts.
In order to reverse the above situation, the Dongfang Provincial Government actively helps companies develop markets and expand product sales. Armand Mbaya, director of the province’s Department of Investment and Planning, recently revealed that Kisangani Textile Company is currently applying to enter the country’s police and military clothing supply market and hopes that relevant departments will support it. “This move will not only save the last textile enterprise in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but also provide market security for cotton supply.” Armand said.
