According to the forecast of the Royal Social Council of Peruvian Clothing (SNI or Peruvian National Industry Association), by the end of this year, the total amount of clothing exported by Peru may increase by 11% to 13% year-on-year, and the export value may exceed the US$1.6 billion mark.
Commission Chairman Mario Fiocco Bloisa explained that market diversification will drive growth in the apparel industry, especially from neighboring countries. He predicts that in 2012, clothing exports from Peru to Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico will increase by 33% year-on-year.
Despite the current financial crisis, the United States remains Peru’s largest apparel export market. Data show that by October 2012, Peruvian clothing exports to the United States accounted for 39% of its total clothing exports.
In terms of the quantity of exported clothing, compared with the same period last year, Peru’s clothing exports will increase slightly this year, between 1% and 2%, exporting 200 million pieces of clothing. But the number of garments is still lower than in 2007 and 2008, when 247 million and 252 million pieces of clothing were exported respectively, Chairman Mario said.
The increase in clothing unit price this year is mainly due to the increase in global cotton prices in 2010 and 2011.
The chairman of the SNI Apparel Committee predicts that Peruvian apparel exports will grow by 9-12% in 2013. He particularly expects strong growth in Peruvian apparel exports next year in Mexico and Brazil, both of which are experiencing rapid economic growth.
The chairman also said that priority will be given to investing in innovation and training and encouraging the development of micro and small enterprises to achieve sustained growth.
