Colombian President Santos recently stated that a number of measures will be introduced in 2013 to protect the Colombian textile and apparel sector and promote the industry to generate employment. Relevant measures include increasing import tariffs on textile and clothing products. In addition, mixed tariffs will be implemented and special duties will be levied on goods imported from the textile and value chain in addition to ad valorem duties.
Colombian Trade Minister Granados said that the government will also form a special force to combat smuggling and customs fraud. This special force will include nine prosecutors who will investigate and prosecute related illegal trade. These measures prevent illegal goods from entering Colombia, especially shoes and clothing.
Measures announced by President Santos also include the proposed Buy Colombia Plan in 2013 as part of efforts to boost trade and domestic demand. Granados emphasized that the textile and clothing industry is crucial to generating employment and social stability. In this regard, the government will spare no effort to increase the productivity and viability of the textile and apparel sector. In addition to these measures announced by the government, Granados said that a campaign to increase the productivity and competitiveness of the textile and apparel industry will be launched this year.
