According to the Thai News Agency, the Director of the Export Promotion Department of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand expects that the 2010 World Cup will effectively promote the growth of Thailand’s apparel product exports.
When making an assessment of fashion, textiles, travel supplies, leather goods, footwear, and jewelry, the director said that from January to October 2009, the total value of Thailand’s exports of important commodities was US$12.41 billion, a 19.6% decrease from the same period in 2008. Fashion Textile exports were US$5.23 billion, travel supplies, leather goods and footwear exports were US$1.18 billion, and jewelry and decoration exports were US$8.77 billion. Therefore, as the New Year approaches, fashion merchandise exports will increase across the board in the last quarter of 2009.
It is estimated that Thailand’s export growth rate in 2010 will be higher than that in 2009, because the World Cup will be held in 2010, which will increase sportswear orders. Thailand ranks second in global sportswear production and exports. Exports of clothing products are expected to grow by 15% in 2010 compared with 2008, and jewelry and decorations are expected to grow by 30.85%. The growth is due to the continued appreciation of gold prices in the world market.
