Taiwan provides zero-tariff preferential treatment to the least developed countries. Bangladesh expects that if it obtains zero-tariff preferential treatment, its exports to Taiwan are expected to increase by 20% in 2009.
The Bangladesh Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry urges the government to approve the issuance of certificates of origin so that exporters can obtain Taiwan’s zero-tariff preferential treatment.
Bangladesh can establish stable diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, a representative of Taiwan’s Liaison Office in Dhaka said that many least developed countries have not established any diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but they receive zero-tariff preferential treatment from Taiwan.
Taiwan has approved about 140 Bangladeshi products to enter Taiwan at zero tariff, including leather, shoes, jute yarn, woven fabrics, wool yarn, handbags, sacks, and bags.
Well-informed sources revealed that Bangladesh has not yet issued a certificate of origin. First, Taiwan must complete relevant procedures, and then Bangladesh can issue a certificate of origin.
Experts believe that if all goes well, Bangladesh’s exports to Taiwan may exceed US$50 million in 2009. In 2006-07, Bangladesh exported US$21.07 million to Taiwan and imported US$472.91 million.
