TheNorthFace launches the “RenewedDesignResidency” program, aiming to further expand the “Renewed Recycling Program”, which will provide designers with a way to learn circular design and apply it to future brand series. Chance.
In 2018, TheNorthFace (NF) cooperated with TheRenewalWorkshop to launch the “Renewed Cycle Plan”. The Residency Plan is promoted by TheNorthFace designer group taking turns to participate in semi-annual learning workshops and “immersive sessions” to learn more about the ways circularity and creative repair can be introduced into extensible product lines, transforming garments previously thought to have irreparable flaws and making them into unique, customized items.
Kelen Hennessy, a senior designer at NF who participated in the first Residency program, said: The fashion industry is considered to be one of the largest sources of pollution in the world. As fashion designers, this is what we do in Problems to be solved in daily work. For us, “RenewedDesignResidency” is a challenging opportunity to rethink the way we work and learn technologies that increase product life, repairability and circular manufacturing of products.
The “RenewedDesignResidency” pilot workshop was launched in October 2019. In this meeting, four designers, Kellen Hennessy, Danielle Mayer, Rebecca Homen, and Cheyne Verhagen, created four re-designs. Each of the productions is unique and can be bid through the auction, which will last until February 19th. There are currently over 70 repurposed works available for purchase online.
The Renewed program was launched in 2018, allowing brands to sell second-hand garments that have been cleaned, repaired and inspected. Essentially the program is a refurbished line of products for consumers who want equipment that is reasonably priced and has a reduced environmental impact.
Since the program began, TheNorthFace claims that the program has diverted 200,000 pounds of clothing from landfills.
