It is reported that in the 2015-2016 season, the output of all major cotton producing areas except Australia has declined. Due to pests and diseases, insufficient input and variety restrictions, Pakistan is the country with the most severe production reduction. At the same time, cotton production in Pakistan is low. China’s cotton output per unit of land is more than 2.6 times that of Pakistan.
According to reports, the reason for China’s higher cotton output is that China has introduced advanced innovative technologies in cotton cultivation. For example, in the 1990s, China introduced Bt cotton, which is more resistant to pests and diseases; adopted mechanized planting; implemented double-cropping of wheat and cotton; used mulching films; and carried out plant cultivation, etc.
The report believes that Pakistani farmers’ planting capabilities should be improved through cooperation with China. The economic and technical benefits of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) should be expanded to different areas, especially the cotton industry, which is Pakistan’s largest economic sector.
