On June 15, 2015, the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) released the 16th edition of the Restricted Substances List (RSL), which includes more than 250 chemical substances. The AAFA Restricted Substances List covers restricted chemicals in clothing, home textiles and footwear and cites the most stringent government regulations or laws. Approximately every six months, AAFA will update and publish the latest version of the restricted substances list. Compared with the 15th edition, this list has made some adjustments and no new controlled substances have been added. This edition of RSL has been updated as follows:
Arylamines: Added national standard GB30585-2014;
Fluorine greenhouse gases: Add Regulation (EU) No.517/2014, remove (EC) No.842/2006;
Metal: Added national standard GB30585-2014;
Miscellaneous: Added national standard GB30585-2014;
Pesticides: Delete “Belgium: Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Consumer Protection, Ministerial Decree prohibiting the placing on the market of articles and products containing dimethyl protofumarate.” Official Journal of Belgium, January 12, 2009 .”
The U.S. AAFA updates the RSL list every six months or so. The updated content comes from the requirements of chemicals in footwear and apparel products restricted by governments around the world in the form of laws, regulations or mandatory standards. The updated RSL list serves as an industry hazardous substances management tool to help global supply chains and the U.S. apparel and footwear industry manage chemicals in the production process.
