An analysis report recently released by the General Administration of Customs said that under the influence of the international financial crisis, my country’s textile and garment industry has been severely impacted, and exports have declined sharply. Although textile and apparel exports have shown a stabilizing and rebounding trend in the past two months, the risk of trade friction has increased, which deserves attention.

According to customs statistics, my country’s exports of textiles and clothing (including textile yarns, fabrics and products, clothing and clothing accessories) in the first four months of 2010 were US$46.56 billion, a decrease of 10% compared with the same period in 2009, and the decline was significantly smaller than that of my country’s overall export during the same period. The 20.5% drop in exports accounted for 13.8% of my country’s total foreign trade exports during the same period, and its proportion increased by 1.6 percentage points compared with the same period in 2009.

Customs analysis believes that although my country’s textile and apparel exports have shown a stabilizing and rebounding trend in the past two months, international market demand has not yet recovered. A recent survey of 200 large-scale textile export companies by the my country Textile Chamber of Commerce showed that in the first half of 2010, the export orders of these companies fell by 20-30%. my country’s textile and apparel exports will still face the severe challenge of insufficient external demand.

At the same time, international trade protection continues to escalate. It is more difficult for my country’s textile and apparel exports to grow. In the first quarter of 2010, the number of recall notifications issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission involving my country’s textile and apparel products increased by nearly 20% year-on-year, and the number of notifications issued by the European Union’s non-food rapid warning system increased by 6.3 times.
